Jaycee Special School was started by the Jaycees of Tellicherry in 1982.
The first of its kind in Thalassery, the school has children from the municipalities of Thalassery, Mahe, and Koothuparamba and 22 panchayats.
The Classes here function in five categories – primary, primary second, secondary, pre-vocational, and vocational. The school provides training in yoga, music, dance, craft, and vocational courses.
The children at this School are initially observed for their capabilities and then provided training in carrying out their daily chores. Gradually they are initiated into the world of letters. And some are given vocational training if they are found capable.
It won the Best Special School in Kerala award in 2008.
The school had been receiving grants under the Deen Dayal Rehabilitation Scheme from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment till 2010. Now the school, which has six special educators, four vocational trainers, one dance teacher and two trainees, apart from caretakers, a watchman and an administrator, is facing paucity of funds.
